What is early intervention?

Early intervention is a system of services that helps babies and toddlers with developmental delays or disabilities. Early intervention services provide vital support so that children with developmental needs can thrive and grow.

Early intervention focuses on helping eligible babies and toddlers learn the skills that typically develop during the first three years of life. The five developmental areas include:

Who’s eligible for early intervention?

According to the Center for Parent Information Resources, eligibility is determined by evaluating the child (with their parents’ consent) in their home setting, to see if a delay in development or disability is present.

Part C of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) specifically lays out laws aimed at early intervention services for children from birth to three years of age. This section of the law specifies that early intervention services should be provided to children who fit into one of the following criteria:

The exact meaning of the term developmental delay varies from state to state (Please see http://www.nectac.org/~pdfs/pubs/nnotes21.pdf that provides a summary of each state’s criteria for development delay), describing the evaluation and assessment procedures that will be used to measure a child’s development in each of the five developmental areas; and specifying the level of delay in functioning (or other comparable criteria) that constitutes a developmental delay in each of the five developmental areas.

In Erie County, eligible children can receive early intervention services from birth through their 5th birthday.  BEBE MARIN SPEECH THERAPY LLC can provide your child with speech and language services from birth to your child’s third birthday. Infants that qualify at birth, may be referred to Early Intervention so the services can begin when they go home from the hospital. Other children are typically referred to early intervention services by parents or physicians, when they observe that the child is not meeting anticipated milestones.

If your child has been evaluated and found to be eligible for speech therapy services, your service coordinator will offer you a choice of local providers. It is our hope that you will choose BEBE MARIN SPEECH THERAPY LLC.

Additionally, children aged 3- 5 years old can obtain Preschool Early Intervention by contacting the Erie School District or Intermediate Unit #5.
